What is a sport?
I've recently been involved in several conversations that begin with the question, "Is E-Sports an actual sport?" I haven't decided the answer for myself, but I've come up with a list of activities that helps folks find the answer for themselves. People seem to think it's an easy question to answer until you start hitting them with edge case type activities. It seems like each activity lies somewhere is a 3d space created from the dimensions of strength, dexterity, and intelligence (flash backs to every RPG I've ever played). The list does a pretty good job of teasing out where the "sport plane" is in that 3d space for a given individual. Here is my list!
These are widely accepted as sports:
- American football
- Football
- Cricket
- Rugby
- Baseball
- Basketball
- Hockey
- Water polo
This is where things start to get fuzzy:
- Croquet
- Weight lifting
- Juggling
- Long distance running
- Paintball
- Dance
- Shooting
- Fishing
- Car racing
- Judo
Now we're getting really out there:
- Chess
- Poker
- Drone racing
- Video games
- Parkour
- Pole climbing
- Sailing
- Sky diving
- Yo-yoing
- Rock climbing
